Schools for Fair Funding Statement on School Finance Plans
04-04-14
We are pleased that both Houses of the Legislature have passed bills providing equitable funding for schools that were previously underfunded.
Unfortunately both proposals cut existing school funding to help cover the $129 million needed to meet the equity requirements of the Kansas Supreme Court ruling.
Both plans also authorize local school districts to raise local tax money for their schools. In reality, only the wealthy districts would be able to raise new tax revenue for schools.
Additional base state aid is still the best way to insure all districts can enhance classroom spending.
SFFF remains committed to a simple legislative bill that provides equitable funding for all schools and Kansas school children.
